Okay, so after reading your post regarding references, I have a question: what’s your stance on, for lack of a better way of putting it, “tracing” stuff you made yourself? Because I often pose models in a 3D program like Blender, and “trace” renders and pictures I take with it. I know that there’s nothing ETHICALLY wrong with doing such, but I fear that doing such is an indicator of a lack of skill.

NOPE, ITS NOT ONLY VALID THAT IS FUCKING SMART OF YOU

you are using tools you have access to to streamline your process. And you’re familiarizing yourself with programs that either are being used or are similar to other programs being used in studios rn to streamline their process, which is something you should boast about if you ever start to shop yourself around to said studios

being able to bullshit out a fully functional 3 point perspective enviroment using only a ruler and a pencil is very very impressive, but its also time consuming, labor intensive and is so fucking HARD to learn, my college required illustration students to take two semesters worth of course work on the subject in order to complete their degree

Shit is hard, and its now fucking obsolete

its valuable to understand how to bullshit perspective with only your mind, a marker and a blank page of paper, but its not what makes art important or valuable. If your audience can’t tell the difference between ‘shit I made in blender’ and ‘shit I made on paper’, why not take the easier route? All you’re doing is saving yourself hours of work oh and also fucking massive headaches.

and fuck anyone who wants to start a dick measuring contest based on how much time they can waste on covering their paper in confusing fucking grid-lines. While they were dicking around with sussing out perspective using tape and string, you were just as busy making shit on your computer, and if they can’t realize that, they can bite me. I’ll take Sketchup’s garbage UI and mouse controls over ANY of the crap I saw them teaching in the perspective classes, ANY FUCKING DAY
