So many kids have asked me “why did you kill them?” when talking about dinosaurs as if I, personally, had hurled a meteorite at them 65 million years ago.

I guess I’ve really been giving off “time-traveling murderer” vibes today. I styled my hair differently this morning. Maybe that’s why.

I was just talking to a little girl who interrupted me with new questions before I could answer her previous inquiries. I was speaking as rapidly as I could, trying to keep up with her, but then she asked who Christopher Columbus was.

“He was the first European to officially sail to the Americas,” I said.

“Is he dead?” she asked.

“Yes,” I said. “He’s been dead for hundreds of—“

“Why did you kill him?”

I stammered for a moment, uncertain how she arrived at that conclusion, and then explained that while I didn’t kill him, he was a cruel person who killed and enslaved lots of people and I am very glad he’s not alive anymore.

She looked at me suspiciously and then said “So you DID kill him.”

I…. fine. Okay. Sure. He had it coming.

Casting directors…

These young Black actresses exist

It’s truly sad that I only know a small handful of these names. smh

They need to stop recycling zendaya, Tessa and Zoe for every black girl role

Just scrolling through I could actually see roles I wanted them to play. One looks like she belongs on PBS as the host of a live-action Sid the Science Kid, one looks like she should be in a jazz biopic, a couple of them look like they’d be shoo-ins for Gracie’s character in a Miss Congeniality remake (or some other movie with a similar plot). Like—these aren’t just random black people, you can tell this is what they DO.

That judge who asked young children if they even knew what a lawyer was and then continued to proceed on their cases is a piece of shit and I hope he rots slowly while alive, he should have refused, what a pathetic evil motherfucker who actually spoke to these children face to face and still proceeded to treat them like criminals and send them off to god knows what kinda awful shit, I hope that sick fuck gets a very slow painful disease

William C Snoufer die bitch

So what this post is talking about is the short film: Unaccompanied: Alone in America, which is a dramatic representation of the plight of unaccompanied minors seeking refuge through America’s immigration courts.

As the Department of Justice does not allow recording devices in immigration courts the film maker used actors to recreate the process as best she could.

William C Snoufer is a retired Judge who agreed to return to the seat to help make the film, he is not someone actually judging these children and I think it was really commendable of him to be a part of this project.

Also I think it’s prudent to note, this project began work in 2014. Unaccompanied children have not had access to US immigration lawyers or translators since at least then, and probably longer. This is not a new problem for the US, just one that has been recently brought to light in the most horrific way possible.

PLEASE SPREAD THIS VERSION

Do not accidentally tar a retired judge who helped call attention to this issue when he’s not the one who did this!!

This is issue is horrible, but William C Snoufer is not the villain in it! Judges still on the bench (and ICE, and the general system) are!!

“Came up with the ever changing floor plan.”

Really, Ravenclaw? Really?

“You know what this school needs? To not make any sense-”

“Rowena, I don’t think-”

“Exactly, you don’t think. I’m brilliant and this is perfect. Moving staircases, walls that think they’re doors-”

“But how will the students get to class?”

“They’ll have to figure it out.”

“…”

“Everyday. They will figure it out everyday. My students will live in a tower and navigate these stairs every time.”

“The stairs move! This doesn’t seem safe…I think I’ll put my common room in the basement, Rowena.”

“Ditto. I think the dungeons would be safer…”

“…My kids will brave these stairs. I’ll take the other tower.”

Symbolic

Neoliberalism

Just so everybody knows, this interpretation of the Yale strike is from Fox News. What is actually happening is if a graduate WORKER must stop fasting for health reasons or otherwise collapses, they can start eating and another graduate worker can take their place.

My graduate worker’s union just fought my own university tooth and nail to keep our benefits and make our lives more liveable. Graduate workers and students are paid poverty wages, when we often are supporting our own families while under the poverty line. Don’t let this shitty interpretation of a very real struggle going on in so many US universities color how you view union struggles in higher education.
