Having an abortion JUST because the fetus is or might be disabled is ableist. There’s just no way around that.
But that doesn’t make it okay to force someone to carry a pregnancy to term against their will. Ableism isn’t going to be fixed by torturing pregnant people.
We need to look at the reasons WHY people make that choice and see what we can do to fix those issues.
For instance, in the US raising a child with special medical needs can be horribly expensive. So can we offer better financial support to disabled people? Universal healthcare might be a step in the right direction.
What about other types of support? Affordable help with daily care? Transportation services? Mental and emotional support for caregivers?
Instead of striving to force people to continue pregnancy against their will. Or shaming them for making a decision when they feel like they have no other choice. Let’s offer actual support.
